Pharmacist tips for Arnuity Ellipta (fluticasone)
You should take it at the same time every day to prevent asthma attacks. It doesn't treat an ongoing asthma attack. Use your rescue inhaler, like albuterol, if you have sudden difficulty with breathing.
Rinse your mouth after each inhalation to prevent any fungal infections in your mouth and throat.
Don't open and close the cover if you don't plan to use the medication. You will lose doses of the medication.
To use the medication, you must first breath out away from the mouthpiece. Then put the mouthpiece between your lips and close your lips firmly around the mouthpiece. Then take a long, steady, deep breath through your mouth. There is an air vent on top of the inhaler, don't block this while you're inhaling. Move the mouthpiece away from your mouth and hold your breath for 3 to 4 seconds. Breath out slowly and gently. Close the inhaler and the mouthpiece cover, and then rinse your mouth with water and spit out.
This medication doesn't require cleaning and maintenance.
Frequently asked questions about Arnuity Ellipta (fluticasone)
Can I use Arnuity Ellipta (fluticasone) and albuterol together?
expand_more
Yes, you can use both Arnuity Ellipta (fluticasone) and an albuterol inhaler, but it should not be taken together often. Albuterol inhalers are considered rescue inhalers. If you're using albuterol each time you are using Arnuity Ellipta (fluticasone), this usually means your asthma is not controlled. It can also put you at risk of heart side effects. If you find you've been increasing the use of your albuterol inhaler, talk to your healthcare provider.
Does Arnuity Ellipta (fluticasone) weaken the immune system because it's a steroid?
expand_more
Arnuity Ellipta (fluticasone) does contain a steroid, which can weaken your immune system, but since you're inhaling the steroid rather than taking it orally, side effects are usually limited to your mouth and respiratory tract. However, long term use of high dose inhaled steroids can lead to side effects similar to oral steroids. Discuss with your healthcare provider if Arnuity Ellipta (fluticasone) is right for you.
How quickly does Arnuity Ellipta (fluticasone) work?
expand_more
Arnuity Ellipta (fluticasone) is not a rescue inhaler like albuterol. It works by reducing the inflammation and swelling of the airways in the lungs over time. It can take up to 2 weeks before you feel the full effects.
Can you stop Arnuity Ellipta (fluticasone) suddenly?
expand_more
You should not stop Arnuity Ellipta (fluticasone) suddenly unless your provider tells you to. Like with other inhalers that contain steroids, Arnuity Ellipta (fluticasone) has to be stopped gradually to avoid unpleasant side effects, such as dizziness, headache, and upset stomach.
Why do I have to rinse my mouth after using Arnuity Ellipta (fluticasone)?
expand_more
The reason you have to rinse your mouth is because when you use an inhaled steroid, such as Arnuity Ellipta (fluticasone), you can develop oral thrush (oral candidiasis). This is a fungal infection in your mouth that can be prevented by rinsing your mouth with water after each use.
